9 Tips and Tools for SEO

Optimizing your site for organic search is not a one-time process.  Fortunately, there are some clear cut steps that, over time, will improve your overall ranking.  Follow the nine tips below to improve your search results.

View the Google landscape

Know the keywords that come up in a search. Do people look for accountants or “financial planners”?  Try incognito searches on your potential keywords and see how many results there are for your searches. Also note which ones come up in the local search results on Google where you see maps and starred ratings. Those results are in a local section because those business owners have created a local page with Google My Business and often have a number of Google reviews.

Identify goal keywords

This is when you take a step back and talk to your team about your keywords and do a little research. There are a number of paid and free tools that can help you brainstorm. A very basic way to start is with an incognito search mentioned above. You can even use a simple online thesaurus to search for synonyms and keep in mind how your existing customers refer to what you offer.

Put keywords in your page tags

Once you determine your keywords words, integrate them into your page title tags and your meta descriptions. Try SEOCentro to see how Google currently sees your site. This tool pulls the existing tags from your site and provides a score for how relevant the tags are to your page as a whole. And remember to focus on your most important keywords rather than stuffing all of them in there.

Look for inbound links

Quality links are still important and the key is “quality”. Buying a bunch of spammy links will only hurt you in the long term. Start by viewing how your competitors are ranking and see who links to them. Paid tools that allow you to see include are Ahrefs and Moz. Think of inbound links as votes. Other sites are essentially voting for a site by linking to it.

Create content

Ah, blogging. So time consuming but it’s important. Google wants to see fresh content on your site that is based on your keywords.  With Buzzsumo, enter a term and see where and how it’s shared across the web. Sharing similar content that people already like can help you spread the word about what you do to a larger audience. You may also discover the content competitors distribute that is being shared. There’s a reason sites like Wikipedia rank well in organic search – lots of content.

Use the Search Console

I have an earlier post on how to use this free tool in conjunction with Google Analytics. One feature that was not mentioned is Fetch as Google.  Submit a link from your site that has your new content and then “submit to index” which is how you tell Google you want your content recognized.

Check your rank

There are a number of free tools that will allow you to do this and SERPs is one example.  To find others, do a Google search on “check my page rank” and a number of other tools will come up.  You could also use plug-ins or extensions to check rank while you’re on a site.

Pay attention to social

If you do a search on your brand, you may discover your social channels rank higher than your website so the content you put on there is important. Social may be the first impression people have about your company.

Create videos

Not only do the engage and entertain people, they can also improve your ranking. And of course you do want to upload to YouTube rather than another video channel since Google favors what they own.Special Offer:
